The American Flag – Incendiary and Insensitive!
By: R.L. David Jolly
What is the name of our country? The United States of America.
What is our national flag? The Stars and Stripes.
What is our nation’s birthday? July 4, 1776.
What is our governing document? The United States Constitution.
What does the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution say?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
So why would 5 high school students be kicked out of school for wearing t-shirts and bandanas depicting the American flag? Because they did so May 5, more commonly referred to as Cinco de Mayo, or Mexican Independence Day.
Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, CA, just south of San Jose, asked the 2 of the students to remove their patriotic bandanas and the rest to turn their t-shirts inside out because they felt it was offensive to the Hispanic students. The school administrators said they could wear their shirts any other day of the year, but not on this day. Wearing the American flag on this day was being insensitive to the Mexican-American students. They called the shirts “incendiary” and claimed that if the students returned to class still wearing their shirts that it would lead to campus violence. Facing suspension for defiance, the boys opted to leave campus instead.
Does this mean that we are not allowed to be patriotic to our own country on other nation’s independence day? Shall students in San Francisco’s China Town be banned from wearing the American flag on October 1 because of the National Day of Independence of China? Shall students in Florida be banned from doing the same on May 20 because of Cuba’s Day of Independence?
Do these people forget that every person in this country has ancestors that came from somewhere else? Even the American Indians admit that their ancestors also came to this continent centuries earlier. We don’t stop wearing or displaying the American flag for each of our ancestor’s ethnic origins, do we?
Heaven forbid that American citizens could be so disrespectful of other countries by displaying our national flag and other symbols on their days of independence. After all, who do we think we are, Americans or what? Do you know of any other nation that would ban students from displaying that nation’s flag on the Fourth of July?
However, are you aware that this fits into the anti-patriotic and anti-American attitudes being taught by many of the nation’s public schools? More and more, we see that students are being taught to be loyal and patriotic to the planet earth and not to America. Some programs go as far as teaching that America is the global villain and that we are responsible for all of the underdeveloped nations and poor people in rest of the world.
Clearly, these 5 students were denied the right of free speech granted to them by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Many of the rights granted to citizens of our nation are being taken away.
It’s time that Americans stand up for America! Proudly wave and wear the flag every day of the year, regardless of what other nation is celebrating their independence. Stand and hold your right hand over your heart when you hear the national anthem. Let the world know that we are proud to be Americans and if foreigners in our land are offended that we love our country, then let them go back to the country that they are so loyal to and leave our country to proud and patriotic American!
